Review: Lee Rosy’s Tea Shop

Hidden in the backstreets of Nottingham city center in the heart of Hockley sits Lee Rosy’s a modern tea-room that offers more than just your bog standard cuppa. I have to say, I’m a little disappointed with myself, being in my third year at university here in Nottingham and I’m only just discovering all these unique places to eat and drink. Being on a student budget as well it’s hard to buy lunch out. But on this Monday I’d had a deadline, so to reward myself I suggested to friends we catch up for tea / cake / sandwiches whatever took our fancy!

When we arrived, we chose somewhere to sit, took off our coats, put down our bags then headed up to the counter. In a refrigerated counter, similar to what you’d find in Starbucks or Costa, there was a selection of  sandwiches and cold drinks. Unlike Startbucks and Costa though these were homemade sandwiches, fresh thick granary and wholemeal bread held together gourmet sandwich fillings. I went for the Goats Cheese, Caramelised Onion Jam and Green Leaf Salad which was delicious, especially the bread it came on. My friend chose the Chicken Salad sandwich on granary which she also said was yummy. She accompanied her Chicken Salad sandwich with a Belgium Dark Chocolate hot chocolate which, wait for it, she said was the best hot chocolate she has ever tasted! I know, that’s one big statement to make, but there you go Lee Rosy’s – my friend (who is not a tea or coffee drinker, I should add) said you’re hot chocolate was the best she’s ever had.

I chose a pot of Earl Grey as my tipple and was delighted with it’s flavor. I managed to get 3 decent (well, 2 and a half) cups from the pot and there was no bitty tea leaves invading the final sips (which you often get from drinking brewed loose tea). Lee Rosy’s claims to offer 100 different types of tea, I didn’t count but there were an awful lot. You can buy it by the mug, pot, to take-away or in a packet to brew at home.

Full from our sandwiches but surrounded by the temptation of homemade cakes, we decided to share one between the three of us. We decided to go for the Chocolate Beetroot Cake with Chocolate Orange Butter Cream topping, well more I chose it and persuaded the others as I’d had my eyes on it since we got there. Unusually for me I forgot to take a photo of it (!!!) but it was actually the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted. You’ve done it again Lee Rosy’s – the best hot chocolate and the best chocolate and beetroot cake we’ve ever tasted.

Overall I thought Lee Rosy’s is a brilliant find and I am jealous of those who have been visiting it regularly. I will be sure to visit again, with a better camera and bigger appetite! A must visit for cafe lovers in Nottingham.
