Review: Honey & Co

Honey and Co is a pure and simple middle-eastern diner run by Itamar Srulovich and his honey (wife) Sarit Packer. The modest Israeli cafe can be found at 25 Warren Street in London. The interior is tiny but functional with minimal decoration. Conveniently close to my office I popped down early one lunch time with a colleague to sample some Middle Eastern cuisine.

We went for the lunch time set menu at £15.50 per person which is a pretty sweet deal. The mezze to start included pitta breads, bouikos, homemade pickles & kalamata, olives, creamy hummus, muhamra & walnuts as well as mini corn on the cobs.

A bouiko is a little cheese bun from Balkans and muhamra is a hot pepper dip originally from Aleppo, Syria, found in Levantine and Turkish cuisines. Each mezze dish was fresh and wholesome, the warm pitta bread was doughy and fluffy (technical speak) dipped in the homemade hummus and spicy muhamra it was the perfect start.

I chose the Pomegranate molasses chicken skewer for main which was set on a bed of cracked wheat, currants & pistachio salad. The colourful dish was made up of so many different textures, watery lettuce, bursting pomegranate seeds and currants, crunchy cracked wheat, soft couscous and tender chicken. The flavour of the chicken was to-die-for, marinated in lemon juice, spices, garlic and pomegranate molasses, which is a sticky, syrupy juice. Cooked on skewers in a hot griddle pan until golden brown the flavour soaks through leaving the most tender, warm and fragrant meat. After the mezze it was quite a large portion to finish but I succeeded and thoroughly enjoyed it!

My dining partner went for the Beef sirloin roasted and marinated in Turkish pepper paste, burnt potatoes, yogurt, zaatar and herbs. Half the reason I struggled with my main was probably due to the fact I almost ate half of my colleagues dish as well (upon invitation). The thinly sliced sirloin spiced with pepper and herbs was juicy and warm. Tossed together with green leaves, sliced tomatoes, a dollop of yogurt and burnt potatoes. Everything complimented each other perfectly, it was just awesome.

Honey & Co has been raved about in publication after publication and rightly so. It’s simple, homemade goodness.
