It’s official. South London has too many brunch spots, but what lead me to Ben’s Canteen was their foodie-licious Instagram account. Pictures of flowery plates topped with colourful foods, featuring some of my favourite ingredients, were hard to resist.
Ben, of Ben’s Canteen, prides himself on creating a relaxed neighbourhood hangout that does dinner, cracking cocktails and exciting wines. At the weekend Ben puts on brunch, offering Aussie treats similar to Brickwood, with the addition of banging Bloody Marys and Breakfast Fizz.
We booked a table for 10.15am on a Saturday to kick off (pun intended) a day of boozy brunching and Six Nations rugby! A refreshing glass of fizzy and fruity orange juice, with marmalade syrup and cava woke us up followed by a two course breakie.
My dining partner, who was also the birthday boy, went for the Big Ben; sausage, bacon, bloody mary beans, hash browns, black pudding, mushroom, tomato, toast and eggs. The best bit was the homemade hash browns, corrrr.

I went veggie (almost) opting for the Sweet Corn & Courgette Fritters with halloumi, balsamic roast tomato chutney and a poached egg. I cheekily added chorizo which brought a bit of spice to the otherwise fresh and summery dish.
We topped up our Breakfast Fizzes with a bottle of Prosecco, I mean we were celebrating after all! Ben’s Canteen has a number of sweet treats on their breakfast menu which are also hard to resist, so we decided to get a plate of French Toast to share. Decorated with edible flowers, a poached pear and a pot of warm vanilla mascarpone, it was indeed a treat.
Ben has succeeded in creating a relaxed all-day pub vibe inside a modern and friendly canteen. Stalk the menu and I’m sure you’ll find something that tickles your fancy. Dinner from Ben’s Canteen can also be delivered to your door from the help of Deliveroo if you’re looking to recreate the neighbourhood feel inside your home.
