Smoke & Salt took over residency from Kricket at Pop Brixton (home of a community of independent retailers, restaurants, street food startups and social enterprises) last summer. Run by Chefs Remi Williams and Aaron Webster, their menu is modern, seasonal and casual.
We begun dinner with a plate of Crispy New Potatoes, Chimichurri, Gorgonzola Sauce and Wiltshire Beef. It was a surprisingly light dish despite the list of heavy ingredients. Chimichurri, made from finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, red pepper flakes, and white wine vinegar added an incredible depth of flavour to the dish. Gorgonzola sauce was drizzled over the potatoes and chunks of beef.
I hope this dish never vacates the menu because it was awesome. Poussin PB & J aka buttermilk-fried chicken with fregola grape jam, compressed grapes and creamy home made peanut butter. I’m not a peanut butter fan so was reluctant to order it but I’m glad we did as the chicken was so crisp and juicy and the jam and peanut didn’t overpower it at all.
Next up, Creedy Carver Duck which was served ‘riliette’ style alongside duck jam. Thin slices of grilled flatbreads dusted with lavender were perfect for piling high with duck meat.
Our final savoury dish of the evening was Miso & Honey Glazed Lamb Belly which came with a tartare of English peas, pickled gooseberries and a lemon dressing. Tangy, crunchy and fresh, delish.
To complete the meal we shared an off-menu dessert of brown rice pudding with figs galore. Baked figs, dried figs and fig coulis. A fig lovers dream. Luckily, I’m one of those.
